What happens when one suffers from manic-depressive disorder? And what are the symptoms of manic phase?

Manic Depressive Disorder Symptoms
In their depressed phase, people suffering from Manic Depressive Disorder show symptoms associated with major depression. And in their manic phase their symptoms are almost completely opposite. Patients are considered to be on emotional ups and downs for a rather extended period of time.
The depression phase lasts on an average for about six to nine months, while manic phase is shorter and lasts for one to three months. There maybe a time gap (of years) between the two phase during which there is normal to near-normal functioning. However some patients may exhibit and experience four or more mood episodes per year (rapid cycling pattern).
In the manic phase, the patient may exhibit either some or all following manic phase symptoms:
- Energy increases
- Increased risk-taking
- Increase in talking. Physical, social and sexual activity increases
- Need for sleep nose dives. Reduced sleeping hours highlights that the manic phase is about to begin.
- Unrealistic belief in their own powers and abilities
- Starts misusing sleeping medications, alcohol and drugs particularly cocaine
- Extreme excitement and happiness, irritability and mental wanderings, manic depressive schizophrenia
- Behavior pattern changes and becomes very unpleasant, interfering or provocative.
